Artificial intelligence has rapidly entered the world of architecture, changing not only the tools available to designers but also the way ideas are developed, represented and communicated. Image generation, the analysis of design alternatives, the automation of repetitive tasks and new visualization tools are expanding the possibilities of the creative process. Yet precisely because these technologies have become so accessible, their use now requires an even greater degree of critical awareness. Otherwise, there is a risk of confusing the visual impact of an image with the quality of the architectural project it is supposed to represent.
Artificial Intelligence as a Tool for Exploration
In the early stages of a project, AI can be a highly effective tool for quickly exploring atmospheres, materials, visual languages and possible design directions. Starting from an image, a sketch or a written description, it is possible to generate numerous interpretations of the same space, expanding the range of possibilities and rapidly testing ideas that would require considerably more time using traditional tools. However, a generated image does not necessarily correspond to the actual design. It can suggest a direction, evoke an atmosphere or highlight a possibility, but it must still be interpreted and verified within a broader design process.
When Visual Appeal Replaces Design
One of the most evident problems with the uncritical use of artificial intelligence is the loss of control over the image. Generative systems are extremely effective at producing persuasive visuals: dramatic lighting, appealing materials, perfect vegetation and carefully constructed atmospheres designed to create an immediate emotional response. But an aesthetically convincing image is not necessarily an architecturally accurate one. Proportions, depth, opening dimensions, thicknesses, relationships between elements and even the overall geometry of a space can be altered during the generative process. The result may be visually compelling while becoming progressively detached from the actual project. When this happens, representation stops being primarily a tool for understanding and becomes a tool for visual suggestion.
Beautiful Images, but Not Necessarily Reliable Ones
This issue becomes particularly important when images are used to communicate a project to a client. Architectural visualization should help people understand what a space will actually be like. If AI unintentionally modifies dimensions, proportions or architectural features, clients may develop expectations based on something that is not actually part of the design. A room may appear larger, a window wider, a ceiling higher or a terrace deeper than it really is in the architectural model. The image may continue to work emotionally, but it loses precision. In this sense, uncontrolled generative visualization can become unintentionally misleading: not because it deliberately falsifies the project, but because it prioritizes visual plausibility over correspondence with the architectural design.
From Image to Architecture
For this reason, it is essential to distinguish between a conceptual image and an architectural visualization. A conceptual image can be free, evocative and even deliberately inaccurate: its purpose is to explore an atmosphere or a possible direction. A visualization intended to represent a real project, on the other hand, should maintain a verifiable relationship with the design itself. A rendering produced from a controlled three-dimensional model preserves defined dimensions, proportions, viewpoints and geometries. Artificial intelligence can subsequently become part of the process, but without losing this underlying reference structure. The difference is not merely technical: it concerns the responsibility involved in representing architecture.
AI and Architectural Visualization
In architectural visualization, artificial intelligence can be extremely useful when integrated into a controlled workflow. It can contribute to developing different atmospheres, post-production, material research, the integration of vegetation and people, and the creation of visual variations. Its role becomes more valuable when it does not replace the architectural model, but instead works from a reliable design foundation. 3D modelling, rendering, photography, virtual reality and artificial intelligence can therefore become parts of the same process. The objective is not to create the most spectacular image possible, but to produce one capable of communicating the project through the right balance between visual quality and architectural accuracy.
The Value of Control
Paradoxically, the more powerful these tools become, the more important human control becomes. The ease with which images can now be produced makes the simple ability to generate them less significant. The real value increasingly lies in the ability to determine which images are accurate, which modifications are acceptable and which ones fundamentally alter the project. For architects and visualizers, this means continuously verifying that the generative process does not introduce inconsistencies and being prepared to reject an apparently more attractive image when it no longer corresponds to the designed space.
The Role of the Designer
Artificial intelligence can rapidly generate thousands of alternatives, but it does not automatically understand the hierarchy between what is merely visually compelling and what is architecturally appropriate. That distinction remains the responsibility of the designer. Spatial knowledge, sensitivity to proportions, understanding of materials, awareness of context and the ability to assess feasibility all remain fundamental. AI can amplify the creative process, but it requires direction. Without that direction, the risk is to produce an increasing number of images that become progressively more seductive while becoming less connected to the architecture they are supposed to represent.
Towards a More Conscious Use of Artificial Intelligence
The question, therefore, is not whether to choose between traditional tools and artificial intelligence. The real challenge is understanding where and how each tool should be used. AI can accelerate research, expand possibilities and introduce new visual languages. But when the objective is to represent a real architectural project, technology must remain subordinate to representational accuracy and design control. Because in architecture, an image is not only meant to persuade: above all, it should make something that does not yet exist understandable. Today, a genuinely conscious use of artificial intelligence lies precisely in the ability to maintain this balance between visual appeal and reliability, imagination and control.
